There is a great interest arous ed in the attendance contest all over the state and this Lodge had a larger per cent uf their members in attendance last meeting than Edgecombe Lodge of Tarboro had, so that shows that our members are behind this contest and expect to stay behind until it doses. NEGRO SHOT AND INSTANTLY KILLED Walter Ward, a well known col ored farmer, was shot and in stantly killed near his home three miles of Enfield at about ten thirty Monday night, and Robert Bell, a son-in-law of Ward's, is being held charged with the crime. Ward was pt a store a short distance from his house talking with a party of other col ored men when he was shot at close range with a shot-gun. The shot was fired . through a window in the side of the build ing. The authorities were im mediately notified and Bell was arrested. Coroner Tiowe, held the inquest Tuesday morning and evidence sufficient to hold Bell was brought out at the hear ing and he was committed to jail without bail to await the next term of Halifax Criminal Court which convenes Monday, August loth. FROM ROSEMARY In a game featured by errors of the home team the Polarine Baseball Club defeated, the locals fourteen to two on the Rosemary diamond Saturday afternoon. The visitors made a total of eighteen hits, two of them home runs. Keeton ot the Roanoke Ranids-Rosemarv team also hit the ball for four base3. Bost, of thepolarines put the ball over the fence for the second time this season and on this occasion placed it over Dobbin's Theatre sign, winning the ten dollar re ward. L. M. Strickland, tried fori beating his wife on Thursday! night plead not guilty and was corroborated by the testimony,, of! his wife. Policeman liishop who , was summoned to the house by neighbors upon the request of one of Mr. Strickland's children, and upon his arrival found Mrs. Strickland bleeding frcm the mouth and with torn and dis hevelled clothing. The arrest took place about eleven-thirty at night and the neighborhood had been aroused along the whole block on wtlich the Strickland menege is located. "Tell it to the Judge" said the Recorder, and as Strickland eodldn't provide a hune'red dollar bond, he went to Halifax jail to await the August term of court. L. L. Barnes, a son-in-law of Strickland, was tried for driving an automobile while under the influence of liquor. The evidence not being sufficient to convict un der this charge, he was fined ten dollars ard costs for reckless driving. D. H. Pope and W. F. II ux. each charged with having failed to report a contagious disease as required by law were discharged upon payment of costs. Higgins charged with having more than three gallons of wine in his possession, stated that he was innocent of any in tention to violate the prohibition law and had made the wine un der the impression that it was not illegal. Esie Lee Pridgen After a short illness of bron chial pneumonia little Essie Lee Pridgen. the fourteen months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Pridgen, died at the home of her parents last Sunday after noon. The funeral services were con ducted by Rev. He died a the home of his relative Mr. Frank Rainey. His sudden death j was caused by heart trouble. He ! will be missed by his many frionds. Roanoke Avenue Residence Entered The residence of D. L. Trayn ham, Jr., on Roanoke Avenue, which had been closed for sever al days due to the absence of Mr. and Mrs. Traynham, was broken into this week anu ran sacked from top to bottom. An inspection of the j day at Quankee Church. iiuu.-f by frknds indicated thut it must have been entered twice, one of the marauders evidently being a small boy, as a chair had been moved near the mantelpiece in one, of the rooms to aid the visitor to inspect the mantel, a dusty footprint being left in the chair. The same procedure had evidently been adopted in the bath room for the inspection of linen cupboards. Drawers were left open with their contents scattered over th floor, faucets were left open in the bath room and one of the lights was left on. How much if any property is missing can not be ascertained until the return of Mr. and Mrs. Traynham from western Virginia where they are spending a vaca tion. Lewis Griffith and Gus Vincent. Watermelons were served about 10 o'clock on New Hope school yard. Every one a3 they left the wagon declared they had thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
